Cygnus Hyoga (白鳥星座の氷河, Kigunasu no Hyōga; lit. meaning "glacier") is one of the main protagonists, and the Bronze Saint of Cygnus. He was trained by Aquarius Camus, who taught him how to control and manipulate ice by arresting the movement of atoms with Cosmo. Following his master's teachings, he tries to maintain a rational and cool attitude, but has an emotional side that he struggles to let go of.
Appearance[]
Hyoga in casual clothes
Hyoga in casual clothes (Hades OVA)
Hyoga is half-Japanese, on his father Mitsumasa Kido's side, and half-Russian, on his mother Natassia's side. He takes after his mother in looks, having blue eyes and blond hair, which sets him apart from his half-brothers who lived in Japan.
In the anime adaptations, Hyoga often wears a sleeveless blue shirt, black pants, orange leg warmers and black shoes when in a casual setting. Occasionally, he is also shown wearing a brown coat. In the manga, his clothes are more varied.
Personality[]
Hyoga appears calm, collected, and unemotional. Beneath the surface, however, he is passionate and devoted to his ideals and his loved ones.
His mother was an Orthodox Christian, and she passed on to him some of the principles of Catholicism. She died in a shipwreck when Hyoga was six years old, an event which left deep emotional scars in the young boy. Upon learning that the Saints of Athena have power that would enable him to visit his mother's final resting place at the bottom of the sea, that becomes Hyoga's motivation to become a Saint. His master Aquarius Camus and his training partner Kraken Isaak warn him that such selfish and naive motives will inevitably lead to Hyoga's death, since the most important thing for a Saint is to be completely divested of feelings and emotions on the battlefield.
Hyoga often finds himself involved in situations that test his emotions. At the beggining of the series, Hyoga is depicted as cold and calculating, and often remains distant from the other Saints. The battle with Phoenix Ikki helps to uncover his tender side, and his true personality starts to shine through. He is eventually forced to fight against both Camus and Isaak. When facing Lyumnades Caça, who takes on the appearance of Camus, Hyoga is also tortured by his sentimentality.
His love and attachment to his loved ones starts off as his greatest weakness. Over the course of the story, however, as Hyoga confronts and overcomes such tests, it progressively becomes his greatest strength.
Biography[]
Early years[]
Hyoga is the son of the Japanese billionaire and head of the Graad Foundation Mitsumasa Kido and of the Russian beauty Natassia. He grows up rejected by his father, with his mother as his only family.
At six years of age, Hyoga and his mother are travelling by ship across the Siberian Sea. The ship is struck by an uncontrollable fire, which causes it to sink. Since there are not enough lifeboats for all the passengers, Natassia stays aboard and gives up her life to ensure Hyoga can get to safety.
After this traumatic event, Hyoga is met by his father, who treats him as a stranger. He is officially adopted by the Graad Foundation and starts to live alongside 99 other children who are his half-brothers, having all been fathered by Mitsumasa Kido. His daily routine is occupied with intense martial arts training, in preparation of the trials required to obtain the title of Saint. Once the 100 children are deemed ready, a random draw is conducted to select which training camps the boys will be sent to in order to become Saints.
Hyoga ends up being sent back to Siberia, where his mother's body rests in the depths of the sea. There, he receives training from Aquarius Camus and meets Isaak, another aspiring Saint, for the first time.
At this point, Hyoga's primary motivation is to gain the power to visit his deceased mother at the bottom of the Siberian Sea. When Isaak learns this, five years into their training, he is infuriated by the selfish motives, but nevertheless feels compassion for his friend.
Hyoga attempts to dive into the sea before mastering the abilities of the Saints, and gets carried away by unnaturally strong underwater currents that leave him entangled in the sunken ship's nets. Isaak rushes into the sea to search for his friend. He frees Hyoga and begins to pull him to the surface, when he, too, is caught by a strong current. Isaak is slammed into a jagged iceberg, face first, losing his left eye as a result. With Hyoga still in his grasp, Isaak punches an opening through the ice with all of his Cosmo. Using the last dregs of his energy, he tosses Hyoga to the surface, before the currents drag him away for good. Hyoga and Camus believe Isaak to be dead.
Saint Seiya, Chapter I: Sanctuary[]
After six years of training in Siberia, Hyoga - now Camus's sole student - manages to become a Saint when Yakov brings him a letter from Sanctuary containing the location of the Cygnus Cloth.
The letter also includes orders for Hyoga to assassinate the Bronze Saints that have gathered in Japan to participate in a martial arts tournament promoted by the Graad Foundation called the Galaxian Wars. These Bronze Saints are all survivors of the 100 children sent out by Mitsumasa Kido. To participate in the tournament is to fight for self-interest, which goes against the rules of Sanctuary and is punishable by death.
Hyoga gladly accepts these orders due to his hatred for the Graad Foundation and his father. As he becomes more familiar with his half-brothers, however, Hyoga starts to question his mission. His concern for the other Bronze Saints grows during the battle against Phoenix Ikki, and he slowly begins to display his true personality.
Once Sanctuary dispatches Silver Saints to target him and the other Bronze Saints, Hyoga drops his allegiance to Sanctuary altogether. His rage towards Sanctuary boils over after his master Camus makes an unexpected visit to Siberia to sink his mother's body even deeper into an underwater abyss.
He fights his master on two occasions during the Sanctuary chapter. The first time is after the Gemini Saint sends Hyoga flying into a different dimension, and Camus pulls him into the Libra Temple. This struggle ends with Hyoga trapped in Camus's Freezing Coffin. The other Bronze Saints eventually make their way to the Libra Temple and free Hyoga with help from the weapons of the Libra Cloth. Andromeda Shun then stays with Hyoga, selflessly burning his Cosmo to revive Hyoga from a state of near death. Later, Hyoga has a rematch against Camus in the Aquarius Temple. The fight there ends with master and student using the devastating Aurora Execution on each other. Camus falls, while Hyoga is revived by Athena.
1986 anime adaptation[]
In the 1986 anime adaptation, Camus is not Hyoga's master. Hyoga's father is unknown, and he is trained in Siberia by the Crystal Saint, who is himself a student of Camus. This happened because the anime was being produced at the same time as the first arcs of the manga. At some point, the anime surprassed the events of the manga, so original fillers needed to be created that later conflicted with the manga storyline.
Sanctuary[]
After paying one last visit to his mother, Hyoga and Yakov go to the great wall of Eternal Ice. There, Hyoga discovers the Cygnus Cloth and proceeds to Japan, to compete in the Galaxian Wars without receiving any letter from Sanctuary.
In the anime, none of the Bronze Saints are Mitsumasa Kido's children, so the sub-plot related to their blood relation does not exist. Hyoga's motivations for competing in the tournament are the same as the other Bronze Saints: to win the Sagittarius Cloth.
Before travelling to Sanctuary, Hyoga returns to Siberia to seek his master's advice and discovers that the village population has been enslaved by the Crystal Saint, who had been brainwashed by the Pope. A fierce battle ensues that culminates with Hyoga defeating and killing his master, which in turn frees him from the harmful influence of the Pope. Although Camus sinks Hyoga's mother's ship like in the manga, he accomplishes this from the Libra Temple, instead of traveling to Siberia, and in all their interactions, Hyoga refers to Camus as his master's master.
Asgard[]
Shortly after the events of the Sanctuary Chapter, Polaris Hilda, Odin's representative in Asgard, a country in the far north of Europe, and leader of the Asgardian God Warriors, falls victim to the evil influence of the Nibelung Ring, and declares war on Sanctuary. Hyoga, Seiya, Shiryu, Shun and Saori go to Asgard in order to save Hilda.
The first opponent that Hyoga faces is Merak Beta Hägen, a God Warrior who is extremely loyal to Hilda. At first, Hyoga tries to argue and expose the truth, but Hägen refuses to accept. Over the course of their fight, they reach a cave with a magma lake, where Hyoga suffers from the intense heat. Hyoga eventually manages to elevate his Cosmo to the Seventh Sense, and defeats Hägen with his Aurora Execution.
Hyoga then meets Megrez Delta Alberich, a God Warrior who wants to gather the Odin Sapphires to overthrow Hilda and rule Asgard himself. Hyoga puts up a brave fight, but Alberich manages to wound him with his Fire Sword. When Hyoga resists, Alberich is forced to use his greatest attack, Unity of Nature, in which the forces of nature attack the Cygnus Saint from all sides and incapacitate him. Defeated, Hyoga ends up being saved by Shiryu, who defeats Alberich.
The Cygnus Saint also assists in the final fight against Hilda, working together with the other Bronze Saints to remove Odin's representative from the spell of the Nibelung Ring.
Saint Seiya, Chapter II: Poseidon[]
Alongside Seiya, Shiryu and Shun, Hyoga invades Poseidon's Undersea Temple to rescue Athena, after she is taken by Poseidon. To save her and the earth from massive floods triggered by Poseidon, the Bronze Saints must destroy the Seven Pillars which sustain Poseidon's domain.
Hyoga proceeds first to the Pillar of the Antarctic Ocean. There, he is surprised to meet Aquarius Camus. Knowing that his master is deceased, Hyoga initially does not believe what he sees and attacks the figure. When Camus easily defends himself from Hyoga's attacks, however, he becomes convinced that Camus is actually there. In fact, the image is an illusion created by the Mariner General who defends that pillar, Lyumnades Caça. Taking advantage of Hyoga's confusion, the Mariner General easily defeats him. Hyoga is eventually saved by Phoenix Ikki.
Upon regaining consciousness, Hyoga goes next to the Pillar of the Arctic Ocean, which is defended by his long-lost former training partner, Kraken Isaak. Hyoga again lowers his guard, and is harshly reprimanded by Isaak for his softness. Hyoga declares his guilt for the events that led to Isaak's disappearance in Siberia and the loss of his eye. He offers himself to Isaak's retribution. Isaak hurts the Cygnus Saint's left eye, but does not blind him. After a tough battle, Hyoga defeats Isaak with his Aurora Execution. Isaak congratulates Hyoga for his power and display of cold demeanor. Isaak also tries to alert him to the true identity of the one who orchestrated the confrontations, but ends up dying.
Later on, Hyoga helps the other Bronze Saints to fight against Poseidon himself. He puts on the Aquarius Cloth and acts as a shield to buy Seiya the opportunity to free Athena from the Undersea Temple's main pillar, the Main Breadwinner.
Saint Seiya, Chapter III: Hades[]
Hyoga in the Hades Chapter OVA
Hyoga teams up with Dragon Shiryu as the Saints of Athena wage war against Hades. Hyoga arrives at Sanctuary after the end of the battle between the Gold Saints. His Cloth receives the blood of Athena, which enables him to awaken the 8th sense and enter the Underworld, Hades's domain, without falling under the god's control.
Hyoga and Shiryu cross the First and Second Prisons of the Underworld without a problem. In the Third Prison, Hyoga defeats the Specter Troll Ivan before he could even finish saying his name. In the Dark Lake of the Fourth Prison, Hyoga and Shiryu meet Lycaon Phlegyas. Hyoga asks if payment is required to board Phlegyas's ferry, to which the Specter replies that the Saints could board for free as corpses. The Specter easily defeats Hyoga and Shiryu, but ends up defeated by Gemini Kanon, Athena's new ally.
Hyoga meets Griffon Minos, one of Hades's Three Judges, in Judecca. He pretends to be under Minos's control to buy time for Seiya and Shun to escape. Afterwards, he attacks the Judge with his Aurora Execution. Minos is able to resist the blow, but dies after stepping into the Hyperdimension beyond the Wailing Wall, as only gods can cross such a space.
Hyoga survives the Hyperdimension thanks to the protection of Athena's blood, and reaches Elysium at the exact moment when Thanatos, the God of Death, and Hypnos, the God of Sleep, are about to eliminate Seiya and Shun. Hyoga attacks with Diamond Dust, but freezes Thanatos only temporarily. He is quickly defeated and the Cygnus Cloth is destroyed. With help from Poseidon, the Bronze Saints receive Gold Cloths, but these too end up destroyed. Thanks to Athena's blood, however, the Bronze Cloths revive and transform into Divine Cloths, enabling the Bronze Saints to defeat Thanatos and Hypnos. After that, they save Athena and help her defeat Hades. They successfully stop the Great Eclipse and save the earth from Hades's plans.
In Saint Seiya: Next Dimension[]
Hyoga in Saint Seiya: Next Dimension
After the events of the Hades Chapter, Hyoga appears near Sanctuary to aid Eagle Marin defend Pegasus Seiya from the attack of the Angel Icarus Toma, an assassin sent by Olympus to kill Seiya. Hyoga clashes briefly with the Angel and sends him away by freezing his arm with his Diamond Dust. Hyoga is concerned about the arrival of the Angels at Sanctuary, but Ophiuchus Shaina shows up and says that she will protect Seiya with Marin.
Hyoga travels to China to enlist Shiryu's help. However, Shiryu is unwilling to go back to a life of battle and wishes to continue to lead a quiet life. Hyoga insists that Shiryu join him, but when he sees Shunrei arrive with a baby in her arms, he stops trying to convince his friend and leaves to Mount Olympus on his own.
There, he clashes briefly once again against Touma. He proceeds in Shiryu's company until they meet the witch Hecate, who shows them the space-time portals at Chronos's Lake of Time which will allow them to follow Athena and Shun back in time. The two dive into the Lake and arrive in the past during the events of the Holy War of the 18th century.
Hyoga arrives at the Aquarius Temple, where he is surprised by the Gold Saint Aquarius Mystoria. Hyoga explains that he comes from the future, but Mystoria does not believe him and freezes him right away. Virgo Shijima arrives shortly afterwards, badly wounded and carrying a young child who claims to be the Athena of the 20th century. As he is about to touch her, Mystoria notices that his right arm was frozen as a result of Hyoga's attack. Hyoga asks him to give Athena to him. Mystoria refuses, telling the Bronze Saint that, if he wanted, he would need to defeat him first. The fight between them is balanced, with both Hyoga and Mystoria nullifying each other's attacks. This gives credit to Hyoga's story, who explains that he learned Mystoria's techniques from Aquarius Camus, Mystoria's successor. As a final test, Mystoria forces Hyoga to freeze the Aquarius Cloth. Hyoga achieves this by using the Aurora Execution. He loses consciousness afterwards, but not before Mystoria proclaims Hyoga as the future Gold Saint of Aquarius, successor of Mystoria and Camus.
Mystoria saves Hyoga's life and gives him Athena, sending the Bronze Saint down towards the Capricorn Temple. There, Hyoga is confronted by Capricorn Izō, who has Hyoga prove his worth in battle before he can proceed. Hyoga receives Izō's Excalibur attack. Their fight is temporarily halted when tremors shake Sanctuary, but it soon resumes, as Izō continues to refuse to let Hyoga cross his Temple. Hyoga then freezes Izō's arm, explaining that he would never turn his powers against an ally. Hyoga's determination is finally enough to convince Izō, who lets him pass with the warning that the Sagittarius Saint, who awaits in the next Temple, is considered the most terrible in Sanctuary.
At the Sagittarius Temple, Hyoga is shot in the shoulder by an arrow by Sagittarius Gestalt, whose lower half of the body is a horse, just like the Centaurs from mythology. Gestalt explains that his form is a gift from Odysseus, a former renowned healer who lived in Sanctuary. Gestalt explains that Odysseus helped bring back Gestalt's beloved horse Tanya to life in this way, which is why Gestalt is loyal to him. Hyoga argues that Gestalt's obsession for a dead horse makes him unworthy to wear the Sagittarius Cloth, and instead praises his successors, Sagittarius Aiolos and Seiya. Hyoga draws a parallel with how he dealt with the loss of his mother, but Gestalt refuses and reaffirms his loyalty to Odysseus. He fires an arrow that hits the wall of the Temple and reveals Aiolos's written will. Hyoga mentions that the will was originaly written in the future, but somehow Aiolos sent it to the past. Skeptical, Gestalt decides to test whether the child Hyoga carries really is Athena by shooting an arrow at her. Athena regains consciousness momentarily to save Hyoga, and freezes the arrow midair.
After that, Hyoga finally reaches the legendary Thirteenth Temple of Ophiuchus. He feels all the wounds in his body disappear and collapses into a deep sleep. Upon waking, he despairs to see that Athena has disappeared. Hyoga then comes face to face with a giant snake, servant of Odysseus, known for his healing abilities. The snake reveals that Athena is inside its belly, rousing the wrath of Hyoga and leading him to attack in an attempt to save Athena. None of his blows affect the snake, however, who explain thet it swallowed Athena because she was about to die. Seconds later, an egg with a translucent shell emerges from the snake's body. It goes back to watching over Ophiuchus's Gold Cloth box. The lid of the box opens, revealing the Cloth that soon disappears. The snake mentions that its work is done and disappears. Hyoga wonders if that meants the Thirteenth Gold Saint has been resurrected.
In Saint Seiya: The Movie[]
Hyoga is visiting an orphanage, when he saves Eiri and Akira from being run over by a car. Later, as he and Eiri watch the night sky, they witness a shooting star, which, unbeknownst to them is actually the Golden Apple of Eris. Later, Hyoga, Shun and Seiya discuss Saori Kido's disappearance, when they receive Eris's challenge to save Athena.
Hyoga first fights against the Ghost Saint Crux Christ. Hyoga leaves him immobilized, intending to interrogate him. At that moment, Eris appears incarnated in Eiri's body, saying that Eiri holds Hyoga's image engraved in her heart. Christ manages to break free and grabs Hyoga, but Eris throws her trident, killing Christ and seriously injuring Hyoga.
Hyoga later tries to reach the Temple of Eris to help Seiya fight the goddess. He, Saori, Shiryu, Shun and Ikki talk to Seiya through their Cosmos, encouraging and empowering the Pegasus Saint. After Eris's defeat, her temple collapses. Hyoga manages to escape the destruction, appearing alongside Shiryu, Shun and Saori, carrying Eiri in his arms.
In The Heated Battle of the Gods[]
After helping a Soldier in Eastern Siberia, Hyoga goes to Asgard to speak with its ruler. There, he is captured and brainwashed by Gothi Drbal. When the Bronze Saints arrive at Asgard, Hyoga is introduced under a new name: Midgard.
Hyoga reveals himself to Shiryu as an enemy, who is reluctant to accept such fact and battle against his friend. Midgard attacks Shiryu mercilessly, who sees no alternative but to fight back. Shiryu defeats Hyoga, reverting the effects of the brainwashing. Once recovered, Hyoga helps Seiya in the fight against Drbal, the representative of Odin.
In Legend of Crimson Youth[]
Phoebus Abel, the Sun God and brother of Athena, returns to life to make the Earth the domain of the gods. He is aided by the Corona Saints and the Gold Saints that were killed in the Battle of the Twelve Houses.
Initially obeying Athena's order not to fight, Hyoga invades the Temple of the Crown of the Sun, coming across Abel, Carina Atlas and Coma Berenices. After refusing to create an ice coffin for Athena, at the request of Abel himself, Hyoga is confronted by Berenices. The fight is not easy for Hyoga, as none of his techniques are strong enough to freeze the opponent's Cloth. Manipulating extremely high resistance wires and cutting power, Berenices tortures Hyoga and destroys the Cygnus Cloth. With his strength fading, Hyoga looks at the crucifix his mother gave him, remembering the good things she taught him. The thought renews his strength, and Hyoga manages to defeat Berenices. Afterwards, Hyoga has a brief fight against Atlas, in which he is quickly defeated. The need to continue makes Hyoga stand up and wear the Aquarius Cloth. Teaming up with Shiryu and Seiya, they defeat Atlas. Hyoga confronts Abel, serving as a shield while Seiya leads an attack that defeats the god.
In Warriors of the Final Holy War[]
Hyoga, Seiya and Shun arrive at the temple of Athena, which has suffered a violent attack. In addition to that, the Gold Saints were defeated and a wave of disasters has swept the planet. The one responsible for these tragedies reveals himself to be Lucifer, whom Hyoga recognizes as the son of God, whose ambitions to surpass his father doomed him to hell. The fallen angel explains that he returned thanks to the Cosmos of Abel, Poseidon and Eris, three deities defeated by Athena and her Saints. Athena offers herself as sacrifice to stop this destruction, but the Bronze Saints oppose this plan.
Hyoga, Seiya, Shiryu and Shun invade Pandemonium, the realm of Lucifer and his Angels of Death. Hyoga ends up facing the Angel Moa, whose fighting tactics consist of creating illusions of incredible realistic power. Moa enters Hyoga's memories and takes the form of Natassia, managing to attack him without opposition. Hyoga tries to fight back, but Moa warns that attacking his mother's image, even knowing it is just an illusion, would mean letting go of his most intimate memories. Nevertheless, Hyoga manages to gather the strength to overcome the emotional conflict and defeat the angel. Hyoga also faces the last Angel, Beelzebub, to give Seiya a chance to save Athena, but he is defeated. Seiya and Athena succeed in sending Lucifer back to hell, and Pandemonium self-destructs.
In Heaven Chapter: Overture[]
Seiya finds Hyoga and Shiryu nearly dead in the battle against Odysseus, one of the Heavenly Angels in the service of the goddess Artemis. Seeing Seiya's desperate fight, the two Saints are reminded that the Saints of Athena must always go on fighting and defeating enemies to protect Athena, no matter how much it costs. They both stand up, giving Seiya the opportunity to continue to Apollo. After they defeat the angel, they feel Seiya's Cosmo colliding with the god Apollo.

Power and Abilities[]
Cygnus Hyoga, is a Bronze Saint known for his superhuman strength, speed, durability etc. He possesses a powerful Cosmos, allowing him to utilize various techniques, including Diamond Dust and Aurora Thunder Attack. By increasing his Cosmo, Hyoga can freeze objects and people. In his fight against his master, Gold Saint Aquarius Camus, Hyoga awoke the Seventh sense and used techniques at the temperature of absolute zero, allowing him to surpass his master and freeze even the Gold Cloths. In the Hades Chapter, Hyoga was able to use an unnamed variation of Camus's Freezing Coffin.
Here's a detailed list of his powers and abilities:
- Cosmos: Cosmos is the power source, inner essence of a Saint, allowing for superhuman strength, speed, energy blasts and durability etc. Saints harness this form of energy known as Cosmos, which functions as the source of their extraordinary abilities. Cosmos is described as a "mini-universe" within each character, and its manipulation allows for a variety of powers.
- 7th Sense: The 7th sense, or Miraculosity, is a heightened state of Cosmos energy that allows the user to tap into the true potential of their divine power. It enables the user to perform actions that defy the natural laws of the universe, such as manipulating space-time, creating a Big Bang etc.
- 8th Sense (Afterlife): This sense grants control over the soul and body in the spirit realm, enabling resurrection.
- 9th Sense: The 9th Sense is Godhood, in otherwords Divinity' is the "Supreme Virtue", and the sense that separates a god from lower beings. To awaken such sense, a mortal must reach true enlightenment, of the likes of which rarely ever happened after the age of myth.
- Strength: Hyoga's known for his great strength, making him a formidable combatant' able to shatter highly strong materials. He also possesses incredible strength in his legs as well, as shown by his ability to deliver powerful kicks. and can increase significantly with training with his own willpower which is also a key factor in his strength and growth. He pushes his limits and strives to become stronger when it's needed.
- Speed: Hyoga's speed goes from Mach 10, supersonic to light-speed by burning his cosmos infinitely depending on which cloth he wears, and level of cosmos he uses at the same time.
- Durability: Cygnus Hyoga's durability in Saint Seiya is notable, particularly as a Bronze Saint. He's able to endure significant damage, including attacks from Gold Saints and other powerful opponents. His ability to survive is due to his strong cosmos and the Cygnus Cloth's protection as well. Hyoga has also demonstrated the ability to withstand attacks that would normally destroy the mind, and has been impaled and survived. His durability is further enhanced by burning his cosmos which he acquires through training and by which type of Cloth he wears as well.
- Flight: Cygnus Hyoga also has the ability to fly, through his enhanced speed and control of his Cosmo energy' which is flight-like movement: While not technically flying, Hyoga's incredible speed and energy allows him to create a levitating barrier that allows him to actually propel himself by running on the energy he creates using his own cosmos' rather than running on an invisible surface. This is particularly evident in the Hades arc, where Hyoga and other Saints fly both within the Underworld and towards Elysion; which can seem like running on the air with a fluidity and grace that can resemble flight-like movement and even potentially reach into and fly through space as well, this is by leveraging his speed and control of Cosmo energy. And with his God Cloth he can also fly regularly and between dimensions too.
- Protective Barrier: When facing the dangers of harsh environments' such as space, underwater etc. they can use their Cosmo energy, which fuels their abilities, to create a protective barrier around themselves, shielding them from harmful conditions, such being able to breathe in space and underwater' without needing Earth's oxygen supply.
- Energy Projection: Energy Projection refers to the ability to emit concentrated bursts of energy, often for offensive purposes. This can manifest in different forms, including energy beams, blasts, or other attacks that rely on harnessing one's Cosmos, Saints have shown the ability to compress and project their attacks. This includes techniques that can be destructive in nature or capable of manipulating atomic structure. Many characters are capable of compressing their cosmos energy and projecting it as powerful blasts or beams during combat. This aspect of their abilities can significantly affect their opponents, making energy blasts a common feature in battles. For instance, characters can unleash focused attacks that can rival or surpass significant cosmic threats. In summary, all Saints can utilize Energy Projection as a component of their abilities, thanks to their mastery of Cosmo, which allows them to perform a wide range of energy-based attacks and defense's’ throughout the series. This capacity places them within the realm of characters from similar series that rely on energy manipulation as a critical component of their power sets.
- Energy Manipulation: Saints can use energy manipulation through their unique power system known as “Cosmos,” which allows for various extraordinary abilities and techniques. It’s the fundamental energy source used, enabling them to perform powerful feats in combat. It is related to the concept of the universe and the energy inherent in all living beings. The Saints, “burn” or unleash their Cosmo to achieve superhuman abilities, often referred to as energy manipulation.
- Energy Control: Saints can utilize "Energy Control" through their ability to manipulate "Cosmo," which is the fundamental energy source in the series.
- Energy Absorption: Cloths worn by the Saints have the capability to absorb light and energy from attacks. This function allows the Saints to mitigate some damage from their opponents, essentially providing a form of defensive energy absorption during combat situations. Saints can also use Energy Absorption independently without their Cloths, relying on their inherent Cosmos, while their capabilities can be enhanced when wearing them too. In summary, Saints can hold and potentially use absorbed powers without their Cloths, the permanence of these enhancements largely hinges on their mastery of Cosmo. Simply put, they might not reach their full potential without their Cloths, and the abilities they try to absorb might not yield consistent or permanent benefits without considerable training and experience in managing their Cosmos. Overall, while there are avenues for power absorption and enhancement, the narrative emphasizes the necessity of understanding and controlling one's inner power for effective use, regardless of whether they are wearing their Cloths or not.
- God Cloth: He can also awaken the Cygnus God Cloth, requiring infinite Cosmos and further enhancing his abilities.
- Intelligence and Adaptability: Hyoga is not just a brute force user of ice-based attacks. He demonstrates a level of strategic thinking in battle, utilizing his environment and his powers to outwit his opponents. Hyoga's ability to adapt to different combat situations and opponents further demonstrates his intelligence, as he is not afraid to change his tactics or strategies to gain an advantage.
Cygnus Hyoga's atomic destruction capabilities come from his Cosmos, the fundamental energy source, which he uses to unleash powerful attacks and feats. These attacks include the Diamond Dust and the Aurora Thunder Attack, which demonstrate the ability to break down matter at the atomic level. His abilities stem from his Cosmo, which allows him to manipulate subatomic particles to create freezing techniques. And one of his most powerful moves, Aurora Execution, reaches temperatures close to absolute zero, effectively stopping atomic motion. His attacks are described as a form of "atomic destruction," as they freeze matter at a fundamental level. Cosmic and Atomic Destruction:
- Cosmo is presented as a destructive power that can be used to destroy atoms.
- Users can manipulate Cosmo to create various effects, including feats that demonstrate atomic-level destruction.
- Cosmo is not just about brute force; it can also be used for more subtle manipulations of matter and energy.
Cygnus Hyoga possesses significant healing abilities thanks to his powerful cosmos, which allows him to regenerate wounds and even heal himself from severe injuries, including those that would normally require extensive medical intervention. His cosmos has self-healing properties, and he has been shown to heal himself from various injuries, such as a broken leg. Moreover, his cosmos can also be used to heal others. Here's a more detailed look at his healing powers:
- Self-Healing: Hyoga's cosmos has restorative powers, allowing him to heal himself from various injuries, including those inflicted by strong opponents.
- Regeneration: His cosmos can regenerate damaged molecules, effectively healing wounds and injuries.
- Enhanced Healing: As Hyoga's cosmos develops, particularly with the unlocking of the 7th and 8th senses, his healing abilities become even more potent.
- Healing others: Hyoga's cosmos has been used to heal others, showcasing its versatility and power.
- Physical and Spiritual Healing: His cosmos can heal not only physical wounds but also spiritual damage as well.
Special Attacks:
Hyoga's Diamond Dust
- Diamond Dust (ダイヤモンドダスト, Daiyamondo Dasuto): A basic freezing technique, which is the basis of Hyoga's attacks. Hyoga uses a punch which unleashes a barrage of ice crystals at his enemy, freezing and potentially paralyzing them. As Hyoga's cosmo evolves, so does the potency of the attack. It is generally the technique that Hyoga uses first, to test the strength of his opponents. The blow may suffer variations, as when used to reflect Phoenix Ikki's psychic blow.
- Kholodnyi Smerch (ホーロドニースメルチ, Hōrodonī Sumeruchi, Cyrillic: холодный смерч, meaning "cold tornado" in Russian): Hyoga most powerful technique, before he learns the Aurora Execution. It is a technique that captures his Cosmo into a single tornado, which is unleashed via an uppercut.
- Aurora Thunder Attack (オーロラサンダーアタック, Õrora Sandā Atakku): A horizontal variation of the Kholodnyi Smerch. It is performed by clasping his hands together as he expels snow and ice at the opponent.
- Aurora Execution (オーロラエクスキューション, Õrora Ekusukyūshon): Learned directly from battling his master Aquarius Camus, the Aurora Execution is a Gold Saint level technique that enables the user to have control over absolute zero, the temperature at which all atomic movement stops and everything becomes frozen.
- Kol'tso (カリツォー, Karitsō, Cyrillic: кольцо, meaning "ring" in Russian): A technique with which Hyoga creates an ice ring that surrounds and paralyzes the opponent.
The Gold Cloth of Aquarius[]
After the war against Sanctuary, Hyoga obtained the privilege to wear his master's Gold Cloth during times of extreme crisis. He, along with Pegasus Seiya and Dragon Shiryu, borrowed Gold Cloths in the final confrontation against Poseidon. Later, in the Hades arc, Hyoga was once again able to don the Aquarius Gold Cloth once more when the five Bronze Saints battle Thanatos, the God of Death. However, Thanatos quickly displayed a sample of his true power, destroying the five gold cloths at once.

Relationships[]
Natassia[]
Main article: Natassia
The one person that forever lives in Hyoga's mind is his deceased mother, Natassia. She died when Hyoga was still very young, having drowned during a shipwreck. The ship sunk into the icy Siberian Sea, where the extreme cold kept her body from decaying. Throughout the Sanctuary arc, Hyoga is shown to visit his mother periodically by diving into the waters. Later on, the ship is sent deep into the ocean's depths as part of a final lesson from Hyoga's master, Aquarius Camus.
Hyoga and his mother are both Christians, and put their faith in a deity different from the show's established Greek gods. As a child, Hyoga received from his mother a Rosary of the Northern Cross, which always protect him.
Aquarius Camus[]

Camus and Hyoga in the Hades OVA
In the manga, Hyoga was trained directly by Camus, the Gold Saint of Aquarius. Camus had a more stoic and cold personality, and his methods sometimes unorthodox, constrasting with the sweet-tempered yet still strict Crystal Saint who is his master in the anime. In one instance, in order to force Hyoga to abandon his emotional ties with his mother and become closer to mastering absolute zero, Seeing that Hyoga's attachment to his mother was still hindering him, Camus created whirlpools and typhoons in the ocean where Hyoga's mother lie. To Hyoga's dismay, the storm caused the ship to sink deep into a part of the ocean out of Hyoga's reach.
Hyoga and Camus later met face to face in the Temple of Libra after the gold saint intervened in the Gemini Saint's "Another Dimension" attack. Here, Camus confirmed Hyoga's suspicions that he was responsible for sinking his mother's ship. Enraged, Hyoga attacked his master, but was defeated after Camus revealed that Hyoga's emotional ties to his mother are still unsevered. Camus then encased Hyoga in a block of ice with his "Freezing Coffin" technique, hoping that Hyoga would sleep until he actually understood his mission and was able to break the coffin himself. Awakening releaved that Camus indeed was intended to freeze Hyoga in order to protect him, so he wouldn't fall on the hands of the other powerful gold knights.
With the aid of the other bronze saints, the Cygnus became free and once again challenged Camus when they reached the Temple of Aquarius. After an epic battle, Hyoga's cosmos finally reached its summit and he challenged Camus with his own patented technique—the "Aurora Execution." Both sides unleash the ice move at each another, and Camus falls—but not before displaying satisfaction that Hyoga had mastered absolute zero. Camus death touched Hyoga's deeply, so it is that in Poseidon he refused to fight with an illusion of Camus.
Yakov[]
Main article: Yakov
A young child from the village where he and Hyoga lived, more precisely the chieftain's grandson. He appears both in the manga and the anime. He is an ordinary child, and hangs out with Hyoga whenever he returns to Siberia and keeps an eye on Natassia's ice tomb for him. In the anime, he was the one to relay news of the Crystal Saint's sudden change of personality to Hyoga and Seiya, since he was the only one able to escape from his grip.
Natassia and Alexei[]

A side story from the manga. While in Siberia, Hyoga was invited to meet a group of warriors known as The Blue Warriors of Bluegrad. According to Camus, they were a formidable group with abilities rivaling the Saints. Alexei, the leader of this tribe, insisted that Hyoga help them in a plot to invade other parts of the world or face death. Hyoga refused on account of being one of Athena's Saints, and a battle began. Unfortunately, Hyoga was doomed to be defeated, as he had not donned his Cygnus Cloth, and Alexei's Blue Impulse attack proved to be too much. The Blue Warriors then imprisoned the Cygnus Saint, with hopes that he would reconsider his position.
Inside the dungeon of the Blue Warriors' castle, Hyoga awoke to meet a young woman caring for him. She introduced herself as Natassia, a name that caught Hyoga by surprise. Natassia then begged Hyoga to stop Alexei from assassinating her father. As it turns out, her father was a man of peace, and abhorred using violence to solve problems. Alexei believed in the exact opposite, and vowed to kill his own father in other to further his own ambitions. Natassia, visibly shaken, threatened to commit suicide if her father's blood is spilled.
Sadly, she could not stop Alexei in time. The deed had been done as he sliced his own father in half. With the Cygnus Cloth at his disposal (sneaked inside by Yakov), Hyoga proceeded to escape his prison and locate Alexei. It wasn't long before the two discovered each other, and a second battle ensued. This time, the leader of Bluegrad was easily defeated, and he regained his senses. Right then, Yakov rushed towards them with news of Natassia, who had followed through with her promise, and was now sitting outside in the freezing ice storm, silently praying. A layer of ice had formed on her body, and her body temperature lowered by the second. Hyoga quickly freed her with a punch, and Alexei picked up his sister as he repented for his deeds.
Grateful but curious, Alexei asked Hyoga why he saved his younger sister without hesitation. As he and Yakov walked away, Hyoga revealed that Natassia shared the same name as his deceased mother.
Saori Kido[]
Main article: Athena
The relationship between Hyoga and Saori Kido/Athena is platonic at best. In the manga, he was initially indifferent about Saori and the Graad Foundation, until she revealed herself to be the current reincarnation of the goddess Athena. Even then, he did not immediately believe her, and therefore did not concern himself with matters of Sanctuary, until his master Camus directly challenged him in Siberia. From that point on, Hyoga decided to commit to his duty as one of Athena's 88 Saints.
Kraken Isaak[]

Young Hyoga and young Isaak, with the Crystal Saint behind
Isaak was Hyoga's long lost friend from his younger days in Siberia. The two met when Hyoga first began his training in Siberia with Camus (or the Crystal Saint, in the 1986 anime). Whereas Hyoga's primary motivation for sainthood was to gain the ability to visit his deceased mother beneath the oceans, Isaak aspired to become a saint in order to rid the world of injustice and evil.
While they were training in Siberia, Isaak saved Hyoga from an attempt to visit his mother. The two of them were caught in strong underwater currents. While saving Hyoga by throwing him to the surface, Isaak lost his left eye. He was dragged away by the currents and presumed dead. In fact, he was found by the Kraken and became one of Poseidon's seven Mariner Generals.
The two former companions fight upon their reunion in Poseidon's Undersea Temple, and Hyoga eventually kills Isaak by using the Aurora Execution. With his dying breath, Isaak commended Hyoga's power, and the two reverted back to being friends once more.
The Crystal Saint[]
Main article: Crystal Saint
In the 1986 anime adaptation, Hyoga's master was the Crystal Saint, a disciple of Aquarius Camus (making the Gold Saint an idol in Hyoga's eyes). The Crystal Saint was a gentle man with a strong sense of justice, whose abilities were around Silver Saint level. Hyoga saw him as a surrogate father, more than a master.
The Crystal Saint was first introduced in the Sanctuary arc, where he openly opposed Pope Ares's actions against Saori Kido and her Bronze Saints. He went to Sanctuary to face the Pope and ask him what was going on. But before the Crystal Saint could speak out further, the Pope used his Emperor Demon Fist—a technique that forced the victim to obey him against his will, practically brainwashing him. Unbeknownst to the Pope, Seiya's master Eagle Marin was a witness of this.
The Crystal Saint was then sent to assassinate Hyoga, using little Yakov and the people of the village where he used to live as hostages. Seiya was warned of this by Marin and managed to reach Siberia in time to free Yakoff and the townspeople and tell Hyoga. A battle ensued between teacher and student anyway, with Hyoga reluctantly landing the final blow. The strike knocked the Crystal Saint out of Ares's grasp, but proved fatal as well; after mourning him, with Yakov and Seiya's help Hyoga buried him in the Siberian ice.

Notes[]
Hyoga's cameo in The Lost Canvas
- Hyoga's village is Kohoutek.
- Hyoga is the only character to who Masami Kurumada dedicated an entire short story in his manga. This story is contained in volume 13 and it is titled "Natassia of the Land of Ice". It likely inspired the anime Asgard Chapter and the second film, The Heated Battle of the Gods.
- In Capcom's videogame Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, Masami Kurumada and Hyoga received homage in the ending sequence of the character Remy. Remy swims to the depths of an icy sea to visit his deceased sister, who closely resembles Hyoga's mother Natassia.
- Masami Kurumada stated in interviews that he initially intended Scorpio Milo to be Cygnus Hyoga's master. He changed his mind when he realized that there could be a relation between the Aquarius and Cygnus constellations, as both Saints had water-ice based fighting styles. In the magazine serialization, Kurumada indeed wrote and illustrated a few pages in which Hyoga and Milo interacted as master and disciple, but he rewrote and redrew them after defining and establishing Aquarius Camus as Hyoga's master.
- Hyoga's background is scattered with Christian elements: not only is Hyoga a Christian who puts his faith in the biblical God rather than the Greek deities, the characters that have a close relationship with him also bear names inspired by Christianity: the name of Yakov is a Russian variation of the name Jacob; the name of Hyoga's mother Natassia is a Russian variation of the Latin name Natalia, which means "Christmas Day"; and Hyoga's friend Isaak also bears a biblically-inspired name.
- Hyoga appears in the manga spin-offs Saint Seiya: Episode G, Saint Seiya: Saintia Shō and Saint Seiya: Time Odyssey; he also makes cameos in Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas and Saint Seiya: Dark Wing.
