Death Queen island

Death Queen Island is a fictitious island located below the Equator in the South Pacific. It has an extremely hostile environment, raining fire all year round, and it is covered with volcanic mountains all over, gaining its reputation of "Hell on Earth". Death Queen Island is the base of the renegade Black Saints, former Saints who were stripped from their title and Cloth for using their strength for personal gain, turning to a life of crime and violence, and making black copies of Athena's Cloths. Very few people return alive from Death Queen Island, and those who return are said to become completely different people than their former selves.

Originally, Shun was assigned to go here to begin his training as a Saint, however after hearing the terrible risks of training here, his brother Ikki chose to switch destinations with Shun. It was on this island Ikki trained under the cruel tutelage of his master, Guilty, and obtained the Phoenix Bronze Cloth, but was consumed by evil and a longing for vengeance due to the grief and hatred that reigned over his heart.

In the anime, Ikki returns to the island and visits Esmeralda's tomb, however the Black Saints appear and attempt to take his life. After Seiya, Shun and Hyoga reached Death Queen and easily defeat the Black Saints, Pope Ares; in the Sanctuary; uses his power and actives the volcano on the island. Everywhere, lava erupted like blood gushing from mortal wounds and engulfed the hellish island. Fortunately, the Bronze Saints were saved by Athena, but Death Queen Island was no more.

Features[]

The island is considered to "Hell on Earth," burning with fire all year round due to volcanoes. This volcanic activity makes the entire ground always hot. The earth burns like the sun which is enough to burn and likely scar the feet, unyielding year-round. A rain of fire that corrodes the skin falls on the island. The vegetation is practically non-existent and the animals do not live long. Without trees, the Sun hits the ground with all its force, both in the day and at night the heat is unbearable, so living conditions are terrible, even worse than on Andromeda Island .

It is considered the most dangerous training place. It is also known as the Hellish Nine Kill Training.

Their geographical refuge has become the headquarters of the Black Phoenix and the Black Saints.

Fire Mountain[]

The active volcano, called Fire Mountain (フ ァ イ ヤ ー マ ウ ン テ ン, Faiyā Maunten), is what causes the entire soil of the island to be always warm. From its crater, it spits rain of fire throughout the year.

Its surroundings were used as a dwelling for the Saints Black headed by Jango, who had in his possession the Pandora's Box of the Phoenix Cloth.

Esmeralda's Grave

This is the place where Ikki buried Esmeralda, placing a wooden cross in the shape of a tombstone. This is also the place where the Black Saints recognize Ikki as their leader and prostrate themselves before him.

In the anime, Ikki manages to return to the island to pay a visit to the grave of his late beloved, being able to spot a flower in the vicinity of the place. After Phoenix's return to the island and his confrontation with Jango, the leader of the Black Saints sect, the island is completely destroyed by the power of the Pope, who causes a violent earthquake, hoping to kill all the Bronze Saints. The volcanoes begin their eruption and the earth cracks until Death Queen Island explodes and sinks into the ocean, destroying the Esmeralda's Tomb as well.

The Phoenix Cloth rested on a high pedestal on Death Queen Island, near the place where Ikki and his master Guilty usually trained. As seen, the pedestal is pure gold and is protected by guardians other than Guilty.

Curiosities[]

Esmeralda's Tomb

Esmeralda's Tomb in Hades OVA

  • In the anime, Death Queen ends up being swallowed by the ocean when the Pope remotely awakens the evil spirits that slept in the magma of the island. It is likely Death Queen Island is as far away from Sanctuary as one could possibly get. But anyway, the immense power of Ares can reach that so far. According to the Hypermyth, it is a remnant emerged from the sunken continent of Mu, and it is here that the Pandora Boxes that contained the Black Cloths would have been found. The Taizen Encyclopedia also supports the hypothesis that it would be a part of the Mū continent.
  • According to the opening of Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter -Sanctuary, " Chikyūgi ", Death Queen could continue to exist in the OVAs, due to the fact that Ikki is shown wearing the V3 of the Phoenix Cloth walking near the tomb of Esmeralda. This could also suggests that the Island was either salvaged or the destruction did not occur.
