Vassilios (ヴァシリオス, Vashiriosu) is a character from the manga spin-off "Saint Seiya: Meiō Iden - Dark Wing". He is the Leo Gold Saint and is part of the twelve Gold Saints, the elite warriors within the army of the goddess Athena. He guards the Leo Temple in the Sanctuary of Athena.
He is a young man of quiet character who grew up and trained in the Sanctuary from an early age, with the aim of becoming a Saint of Athena. From a young age, he used to spend time with Eulalia and Tristan, a girl and a boy of his age who also trained in the Sanctuary to become Saints and with whom he formed a strong friendship, especially with Eulalia, with whom he shares some common tastes, as his passion for manga, anime and video games.
Appearance[]
His appearance seeks to reflect the typical youth and impulsiveness of lions, characteristics that he shares with the Saints of Leo from the main universe of Saint Seiya. Therefore, it has traits that give it an appearance similar to that of Aiolia and Kaiser. This is a young, fair-skinned adult with a robust and athletic physique. In addition, his hair is reddish, slightly long and messy. He is considered attractive by several of the female students at Graad Academy, who cannot help but approach him in hopes of catching his attention. Even Esther, on occasion, calls him "handsome boy".
During the mission at Graad Academy, it is common to see him wearing a school uniform most of the day. This uniform consists of a black jacket with white lines on the edges, a white shirt with a green tie tied with an elegant windproof knot at the neck, a black trousers and, like shoes, a pair of black shoes.
When preparing to fight an enemy, Vassilios summons the Leo Cloth to protect his body and fight to the fullest of his abilities in battle.
Personality[]
Vassilios is an extremely friendly and energetic young man. Project great confidence into all your conversations, expressing your thoughts directly and always with a smile on your face, no matter if your comments or tastes seem unusual to others; just don’t worry about it. In addition, this confidence is also reflected in combat, where he rarely loses his composure and always keeps a smile full of security while facing an opponent, no matter how strong.
Likewise, his smile at a powerful rival might suggest that he enjoys the fighting as a young man of warm blood. However, this does not mean that I am seeking to fight against everyone or that I am trying to solve everything through violence. As he states, he prefers to avoid unnecessary conflict, especially if he perceives his opponent to be a good person; in such cases, he chooses to give a warning and avoid confrontation on that occasion. It is also possible to see that he can resolve a conflict situation with words alone, as he always shows sincerity in his intentions.
It is not clear whether it is intentional or simply a misunderstanding, but Vassilios gives the impression to others of being flirtatious, as he is always surrounded by girls. Even Esther points him out when she talks to him, questioning whether he is at the academy solving the students' mysterious disappearance or just there to flirt with them.
Although he always projects calm and tranquility, even in front of his enemies, these characteristics quickly disappear if he perceives that something bad could happen to Eulalia, his childhood friend. At that moment, her smile fades, and she takes a more serious attitude as she tries to do everything possible to protect her.
History[]
Childhood[]
Vassilios is a young man who comes from a family of Saints with an impeccable record. Together with Eulalia and Tristan, he grew up and trained in the Sanctuary with the purpose of becoming a Saint in the service of Athena. This led to the forging of a great friendship between him, Eulalia and Tristan, which continues to this day. During his childhood, Vassilios shared moments of fun with Eulalia, who had a personality more compatible with his own, even developing mutual interests as time passed like their taste for manga, anime and video games.
The awakening of the goddess[]
When Cattleya first meets with the Gold Saints and the Pope at the Shrine, Vassilios is lined up alongside the other Gold Saints in the Pope’s chamber. Observing the young woman’s behavior, they begin to express their opinions about Athena. Vassilios points out that Cattleya seems to be kind and protective. Like him, most of the Gold Saints seem to have a favourable opinion of the young woman. After this, the Pope continues with the presentation, and most of the Gold Saints are limited to observing what happens without intervening.
The Awakening of Griffon[]
Time later, the Pope meets with Cattleya and some of the Gold Saints to discuss the appearance of an unusual cosmos and the mysterious disappearance of several female students at the school that Cattleya had attended, which they suspect is related to the Specters and the presence of one of the Leaders of the Underworld in that place. Since the missing are mostly women, Sōjirō proposes to take a girl with them and decides that Kōgetsuki is suitable. However, at that moment, Eulalia arrives at the Temple and tells Sōjirō that she would be better for this mission. Upon hearing this, Sōjirō asks her if she could behave like a normal girl, to which she replies that she is an expert in Japanese culture, having seen several manga and anime. Sōjirō reacted incredulously to this, but the Pope agrees to send her. Shortly after, Vassilios arrives at the Temple and seeing that Eulalia would be on this mission offers to accompany them, arguing that he is also an expert in Japanese culture. In the end, the Pope decides to send Sōjirō, Eulalia and Vassilios on this mission.
Thus, Vassilios, in the company of Eulalia and Sōjirō, would travel to Japan for the purpose of entering the Graad Academy as a student. When they arrived at the entrance, Eulalia noticed that Sōjirō called Shōichirō "brother", which led her to stop and engage in a brief conversation with him. Unaware that Shōichirō was a Specter, he finished talking to him and said his goodbyes. However, Vassilios appeared silently behind Shōichirō and mentioned to him that his cosmos was identical to the one of the Specter who had attacked Athena days before, acknowledging that he was one of the Leaders of the Underworld. Despite this, Vassilios clarified that he did not feel evil in Shōichirō, so he did not want to fight him and only warned him that if he hurt his beloved Eulalia, he would not be forgiven. Shōichirō, for his part, made it clear that he had no intention of fighting either, which led Vassilios to respectfully present himself to him, shaking his hand. After a friendly farewell to Shōichirō, Vassilios set off to reach Eulalia.
After entering the Graad Academy, Sōjirō asks Vassilios and Eulalia to try to keep a low profile as they are on an infiltration mission and need to go unnoticed to discover the identity of the enemy. However, Eulalia quickly becomes the center of attention of all the boys in school, just as the attractiveness of Vassilios catches the eye of some girls, who come to invite him to a karaoke party, something he accepts.
At nightfall, Vassilios, accompanied by a group of students, including Esther and Suzuri, go to a karaoke center. There, Vassilios shows off his singing skills in front of all his peers. In the middle of her performance, she notices Suzuri and Esther leaving the room. So, after she finishes singing, she goes out to investigate what they were doing. Vassilios considers the behavior of Esther and Suzuri as suspicious and decides to launch, as a sign of presentation, an attack against them. After having dodged the attack, Esther reproaches Vassilios for being rude by interrupting a conversation between two friends. Vassilios explained that he was not an enemy and that he was there to investigate the disappearance of the girls in the academy, offering to collaborate with her on this task. However, Esther decided to test him and activated her Balance of Curse, a technique that would rip out his heart to weigh it on a scale and judge his wickedness. Vassilios felt intense pain in the chest and blood began to gush, but agreed to submit to judgment. This act of bravery convinced Esther of the sincerity of Vassilios, thus stopping his attack by understanding that Suzuri and Vassilios did not pose a threat. In addition, Vassilios and Esther noticed the arrival of a powerful enemy, and Esther asked Suzuri if he was one of his companions.
The three chase the violent cosmos to the center of the city, where they meet Shedim, who had previously defeated Jamian. Vassilios accepts Shedim’s challenge and proposes to go fight somewhere else so as not to endanger the civilians. Before leaving, Vassilios offers to join Suzuri and Esther if they wish to see the match, but both refuse the invitation. So he and Shedim disappear at super speed. Upon reaching a wasteland, Vassilios presents himself as the Saint of Leo and expresses his surprise to see that Shedim has followed him without objection. To which Shedim responds that he never rejects a challenge and invokes his sword to face Vassilios.
The sword splits, becoming an armor, and is presented as Shedim, the King of Swords. By observing the appearance of his opponent and hearing his title, Vassilios realizes that he is not a Specter, so he wants to know who he serves. However, Shedim responds that he will only reveal the name of his master if he succeeds in defeating him. Then, Vassilios summons the Leo Cloth and begins the fight, with Shedim attacking with his Infinite Blade, unleashing a powerful energy slash with his sword. Vassilios defends himself by attacking with his Lightning Bolt. Shedim praises his opponent for blocking the cut, but reveals that his sword is infinite and several slashes hit Vassilios, causing him a wound in the cheek. In response, Vassilios strikes back with the Lightning Plasma to face the infinite cuts with his infinite fist. As the infinite attacks of both techniques collide, Shedim is impressed to see that his opponent’s fist speed surpasses light. At the end of the clash of both techniques, Vassilios highlights the impressive strength of his opponent, indicating that while he enjoys the fight, he really wants to know the identity of his master. So, he’ll go all in on his next attack.
As they prepare to attack, Vassilios begins to feel bad and in the distance, in a tower, he watches a girl who tells Shedim that he must stop playing, because they have no time for it. Shedim names the girl as Seirim, King of Diamonds, and assures her that his intervention was not necessary. Seirim responds that he has trapped a cute Gold Saint in his cage for the sacrifice. Upon hearing this, Vassilios immediately deduces that it is Eulalia. To which she replies that if it is someone important to him, since he is trapped in his cage, the Graad Academy, and they plan to devour her. Seirim creates an energy circle over Vassilios, and then explains that it is his Paranoia Medallion and that the more he tries to move, the more internal damage he will receive. At the end, Seirim bids farewell to Vassilios, and Shedim, with an expression of annoyance, withdraws to her side. Vassilios yells at them to stop and not to harm Eulalia, but when trying to chase them, wounds appear on his body and begins to bleed everywhere, causing him to fall to the ground while shouting: "Damn!"

The name "Vassilios" is of Greek origin and is a variant of the name "Vasileios" (Βασίλειος in Greek). This name is quite common in Greece and other Greek communities around the world. " Vasileios" is derived from the Greek word "basileus" (βασιλεύς), meaning "king" or "monarch". It is a name that has historically been used to denote nobility or royalty in Greek culture.
Notes[]
- The character’s technical sheet, included in Volume 5, also describes his hobbies, tastes and aversions.
- Hobbies: View anime.
- Tastes: Karaoke, Japanese food and what Eulalia likes.
- Dislikes: The tragedy, the complicated philosophy and what bothers Eulalia.
- In the Saint Seiya franchise, Vassilios is the second Saint of Leo whose speed is described as exceeding the speed of light. The first to do so was Aiolia in the spin-off manga Episode.G. However, Aiolia could only achieve such a feat by pushing herself to the limit, while Vassilios achieves it casually and without any effort. In addition, it is not only limited to exceeding that speed, but also states that it can perform infinite blows, which confirms that it considerably exceeds the speed of light.
- In chapter 27, when Vassilios summons the Leo Cloth to fight Shedim, it is possible to see that he holds the helmet of armor in his left hand. Although curiously, Vassilios never gets to put it on at the beginning of the fight, and just disappears as if he had never been there.
