Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac is a Netflix original CG-animated series based on Masami Kurumada's Saint Seiya manga. It is a retelling of the story and follows a collection of warriors known as Knights, who are charged with protecting the goddess Athena. The first season is twelve episodes long and encompasses the plot of the Galaxian Wars arc up to the Silver Saints arc. The first six episodes premiered on July 19, 2019, and the remaining six are scheduled to be released on January 23, 2020.

Plot[]

A boy, Seiya, who lives in a children's nursing home, awakens an inner power called Cosmo one day. He is then chosen to be one of the Knights to protect the goddess Athena. Hoping to be reunited with his long-lost sister, he travels to Greece, to retrieve the Pegasus armor and joins the Galaxian Wars, a private tournament being held by Sienna Kido, the reincarnation of Athena. There, he meets Long, Magnus, and Shaun. They work together to protect Athena from the dark forces under Vander Graad's command.

Season 1[]

Season 1 premiered worldwide on Netflix on July 19, 2019.

  1. "Seiya": After exhibiting special powers, Seiya is approached by the enigmatic Alman Kido, who urges him to fulfill his destiny and become a Bronze Knight.
  2. "Burn Your Cosmo": Seiya obtains the Pegasus armor but, to be a true Knight of Athena, he must first prove himself in the Galaxian Wars tournament.
  3. "Enter The Dragon": Believing in a dark prophecy that foretells the doom of mankind, Magnus confronts Sienna Kido. Seiya faces his toughest opponent yet: Dragon Long.
  4. "Nebula Chain": Reluctant to fight, Shaun takes a defensive approach in her match against Unicorn Jab. Meanwhile, Vander Graad's army attacks. 
  5. "The Black Knights": Seiya and the Bronze Knights follow Nero to retrieve the stolen Sagittarius Gold armor, only to be confronted by Vander's Black Knights.
  6. "Phoenix Rising": Nero has built up overwhelming power with hate. To stop him, the Bronze Knights must combine their strength to reclaim the Sagittarius Gold armor.

Season 2[]

Season 2 is set to premiere on January 23, 2020.

7. "The Silver Knights": Seiya awakens, having survived the collapsing volcano. He quickly learns Sanctuary has sent Silver Knight Misty and his old master Marin to kill him.

8. "The Rising Tide": Fearing for Sienna's safety, Marin orders Seiya to protect her. Alone, Marin faces the Silver Knights Hound Asterion and Whale Morris.

9. "To Fight for Athena": Reunited with the Bronze Knights, Seiya and the others search for Sienna. Silver Knight Jamian the Crow appears, determined to stop them.

10. "The Challenge": Perseus Argol's Medusa Shield turns its opponents into stone. One of the Bronze Knights makes a life-altering decision to protect Sienna.

11. "THE PROPHECY": Guraad assembles his own Black Knights to protect mankind from the gods. When his forces abduct Sienna, the Bronze Knights set out to rescue her.

12. "ONE WAR ENDS, ANOTHER BEGINS": The Bronze Knights face Guraad's upgraded Black Knights. Though Seiya and the others gain the upper hand, Guraad proves to be a formidable foe.

Trivia[]

  • Several names were changed in the English version of the series, but not in other languages. For example: Seiya's sister Seika was renamed Patricia, Mitsumasa Kido became Alman Kido, Tatsumi became Mylock, Shiryu became Long, Hyoga became Magnus, Ikki became Nero, Shun became Shaun, Saori Kido became Sienna, Cloths became armors, and Saints were renamed as Knights.
    • Interestingly, in the spanish dub of the series, they are also called Knights [Caballeros] instead of Saints [Santos]. Reason for this is because the series is known as Knights of the Zodiac in latin america since the 1986 anime adaptation, due to localization changing the title from Saint Seiya to Caballeros del Zodiaco [ spanish for Knights of the Zodiac].
    • French dub included also the term Knights [Chevaliers"], being the series known as "Chevaliers du Zodiaque" [french for Knights of the Zodiac].
  • In this adaptation, Andromeda Shun was genderswapped from male to female.
