Saori Kido (城戸沙織, Kido Saori) is the latest reincarnation of the goddess Athena, born with the aim of leading her Saints to defend the Earth in Holy Wars. Saori can use the element of Light.
Chronolgy (Mars-Hen)[]
First War Against Mars[]
After a period of peace, the newly christened God of War known as Mars appeared and attacked Saori. Sagittarius Seiya and his companions, Cygnus Hyoga, Dragon Shiryū, Andromeda Shun, and Phoenix Ikki, returned to protect her. In addition to the God of War, the Legendary Bronze Saints had to combat his generals, the Four Heavenly Kings: Bacchus, Romulus, Vulcan, and Diana. While they were in trouble, Saori, wearing her Cloth, intervened and pierced the Four Kings with shards of light, weakening them enough that they could be sealed. (This affliction would continue to affect them when they were invoked by Pisces Amor thirteen years later, to the point the new set of Bronze Saints accompanying Pegasus Kōga were able to overcome them after a long fight.)
While Mars seemed to be on the verge of losing, Medea invoked a Dark meteorite called Erebus and summoned it to the battlefield. Saori immediately intervened to stop the danger, singlehandedly keeping back the comet. When she felt her strength give up, she noticed the presence of two babies - a red-haired boy and a blue-haired girl - in ruins not far from the site. Inspired to protect them, she courageously burned her light Cosmo to the point of reaching the children and destroying the meteorite.
However, the shock of Light and Darkness released a power that changed the appearance of Cloths and housed them in Clostones, giving the Saints and Martians control over the elements. In addition, both Mars and the little boy would be struck by the darkness. Ares hastened to rescue the boy, but did not have time to do the same for the second child, who was rescued by the god of war instead as his final act before retreating. With this event's hostilities concluded, Saori then made the oath to raise the boy, feeling responsible for the contact with the Darkness.
Second War Againts Mars[]
However, as first seen in the very opening scene of the series, a second war followed only a few months at the most later when Mars went to attack saori directly at the Sanctuary as she was caring for the boy. Despite Seiya once again arriving quickly on the scene to engage in battle against the god of war, Mars was able to wound her with a mark of darkness, which appears outwardly as a reflection of outer space and also threatens to rapidly overtake one's body in proportion to the burning of their Cosmo. Seiya and the other Legendary Saints, who also intervened on Athena's behalf in this battle, were also affected by Mars' dark marks while shielding her from damage with their own bodies. Mars would retreat once again after exhausting his own power, with this war ending as abruptly as the first.
Anticipation of a Third Conflict[]
The threat of Mars (temporarily) removed, Saori retired to her private island along with Shaina, her butler Tokumaru Tatsumi, and the boy, named Kōga. During the thirteen years that followed, she strove to raise the boy as a mother, all the while having Shaina train him in becoming a Saint. However, she did not tell Kōga about either his origins, nor her true identity, resulting in the boy struggling to understand and accept the future placed before him. Around this time, she also found a clothless, self-imprisoned Capricorn Ionia and asked him to once again take up his gold cloth and reopen the Palestra, a school established to train new generations of Saints. He would accept and become its Principal once more.
The Third War Against Mars[]
Feeling the approach of an enemy once again, Saori gave Kōga the Pegasus cloth stone while presenting it as a simple gift. Shortly after this, however, the fully recovered Mars would return once again to attack Saori. Despite Kōga and Shaina's best efforts to protect her, they were easily pushed back and could only watch in horror as Mars abducted Athena. It was this event that finally motivated Kōga to become a Saint, succeeding Seiya as the Bronze Saint of the Pegasus Constellation, out of his desire to rescue and protect her; from there, his journey would begin and lead him first to Palestra. Saori, meanwhile, would be trapped in the grasp of the withered branches of a tree anchored to the foundation of the world of Mars, with her Cosmo being slowly drained to sustain the red planet. Alive but unconscious, she can neither escape nor communicate normally.
Battle Of Planet Mars[]
Transported to Mars by Amor, Kōga finally ends up finding Saori. It is at this point that Medea operates in the shadows to make him believe that his adoptive mother was made to kill. Kōga, unable to control the darkness in him, finds himself possessed by the god Abzu, who immediately decided to eliminate Athena. Kōga's friends—Sōma, Yuna, Ryuho, Haruto and Eden— all try their hardest to stop its sinister design; however Abzu effortlessly takes them all out.
With only Yuna left conscious, Saori comes in telepathic contact with the Bronze Saint to encourage him to fight off Abzu's possession. However, even with Saori and Yuna's, Koga is still not strong enough to stop the God of Darkness from approaching her. It is at this juncture that Seiya is back, released from the depths of the planet. Seiya and Yuna unite their efforts to finally expel Abzu from Kōga's body, causing the now-corporeal god to retreat; however, as he hastens away into the darkness, he takes Saori with him. Kōga pursues him, and the two engage in a violent struggle, where Koga manages to both destroy Abzu and release the goddess. Abzu defeated, Saori and her Saints return to Earth and the light irradiating the resurgent blue planet wiped their wounds of Darkness.
Mars-Hen (Manga Vers)[]
- Saori puts his Clostone to Kōga after she found he had first awakened to the Cosmos during a workout with Shaina. Furthermore, this gift takes place in his home, not on the beach.
- Mars invokes a golem to remove Saori rather than intervening directly. The creature fails in its mission.
Chronology (Pallas-Hen)[]
New War[]
Some time after the struggle against the god of darkness, Saori has a recurring dream announcing a confrontation between her saints and the army of the goddess Pallas. Eventually she sends Seiya on a mission to kill Pallas, while a curse takes hold because of Pallas's return, represented by a purple artifact around both goddesses' right arms serving as the conduit: as she grows, Pallas will gradually absorb the energy of Athena.
Later, Saori received the Gold Saint's return from his mission. The curse and overall conflict would continue to escalate because he failed: he did indeed not dare take the life of a goddess as a child. Saori comforts him and asks him to forgive her for having faced such an experience. After the two express their mutual concern with the situation, Seiya renews his oath and promises that he will protect Saori. Shortly after, she welcomes Kōga and informs him about the situation before handing him the mission of gathering the Saints scattered throughout the world. In a later meeting with all the remaining Gold Saints, when they urge her to take action to stop the growing number of Pallasite attacks worldwide, Saori expressed her doubts, wondering if she should let Pallas kill her to avoid keep harm from coming to any more victims. This is then sharply reprimanded by Taurus Harbinger, causing her to regain her determination as she decides to call all Saints to officially start the war.
During the rally, she is caused discomfort by the curse binding her to Pallas. Seiya intervenes to prevent her from falling as she momentarily collapses, while Libra Genbu takes her place in talking to the Saints and rallying them for battle against the Pallasites.
Headed to Palestra[]
From the Sanctuary, Saori feels Genbu's death occur at the Palestra, dissipating the last of her hesitation. She goes to the Saints' school, where her presence alone is enough to stop the offensive of Daggers Hati and his Pallasites Soldiers.
Then, putting her life in danger, she manages to locate Pallas's sideout. On this occasion, she briefly talks with her sister.
After this exhausting act, an unconscious Saori is brought to the Sanctuary by Seiya, who leaves her in the custody of the other Gold Saints.
Battle of Pallas Belda[]
Once she regains consciousness, Virgo Fudō talks with her about the chances of their camp and declares that the Saints must awaken to the Omega if they want to have a chance against the most powerful Pallasites. Despite her health getting worse, and momentarily losing consciousness again later, Saori, feeling she has allowed too many Saints to die in battle for her sake by sitting on the sidelines, decides it's time to act once again. She draws out her cloth once more using her divine blood, trusting Harbinger with its safekeeping, then leads him and the other Gold Saints to Pallas Belda to take the lead for the Saints already doing battle there.
Pallas Castle Gate[]
At last Koga arrives at the front of Pallas' castle, which is sealed by the "Gate of Time", a massive door reinforced with Titan's powers. Koga attempts to break through the gate by himself but his own life is put in danger instead, until Athena and her Saints arrive to lend a hand. Once inside the castle, Saori and the Saints are informed by Europa that only one of the four separate paths ahead of them lead to Pallas, and flees soon after, thus they decide to split up. Meanwhile, the Heavenly Kings conspire together not only against Athena, but against Pallas as well.
Battle Of Pallas castle[]
Integra vs Paradox[]
Athena, Seiya, Kiki, Fudo, and Harbinger are attacked by their former Gemini Gold Saint ally turned Pallasite Second Class Paradox. Integra, the new Gemini Saint and Paradox's twin sister, arrives to protect Athena and settle their score. At one point, Harbinger disobeys Athena and interrupts - temporarily - the duel by throwing his Greatest Horn, admitting not bear the thought of killing two sisters.Once defeated, Paradox is forgiven by Saori and reforms, just to be later severly wounded by the Pallasite First Class Gallia.
Gold Saints vs Gallia[]
After dealing with Paradox, Gallia turns her attention to Athena and the Gold Saints, easily deflecting all their attacks until she reveals her Photontector. Meanwhile, the other three groups figure out the meaning of the endless running, figuring that someone has put them into the endless hall Seiya's attacks are easily deflected, Pallas informs her to stand back, with Gallia coldly responding with her loyalty belonging to someone else. However, Integra and Paradox combine their Cosmo, and destroy Europa's trick with the Another Dimension, allowing the other groups to reach the battlefield. However, Paradox succumbs to her wounds and dies in Integra's arms, fulfilling her destiny as the Gemini Gold Saint
Gold Saints vs Hyperion[]
Along the way, the group is intercepted by Great Sword Hyperion . His power is such that the combined efforts of Seiya,Habinger and Shiryu get no result. Fudo, Kiki, and Shiryu face off against Hyperion, allowing Athena, Seiya, and Harbinger to move forward. Hyperion's Destruction Tector and Tenchi Destruction Slash holy sword prove too powerful for the three Gold Saints' attacks on their own. In a final show of strength, they combine their Cosmo into a single forbidden attack: Athena Exclamation. The Saints and Pallasites throughout Pallasvelda react to the outpouring of Cosmo, and as the Tenchi Destruction Slash is destroyed, the three Saints' Cosmo vanishes.
Battle Of Pallas Chamber[]
Accompained only by Seiya and Harbinger, Saori finally comes face to face with Pallas. Titan steps in to protect his master and Harbinger challenges the Pallasite, using Athena's cloth to draw his attention. Treating him as a mere ruffian, Titan is surprised by the true might of the Taurus Saint, who proves himself far more powerful and noble than he claims to be.
The long awaited confront between Athena and Pallas begins. Saori tries her best to dissuade Pallas, but her drive to enact revenge on Athena is stronger. However, even while draining her sister's energy and donning the strongest of all Chronotectors, Pallas is defeated by Athena and Titan stands between them to protect her in the last moment. To protect Saori, Seiya, bringing forth the true power of the Sagittarius cloth, steps in to confront the Pallasite.
After donning his New Gold Cloth, Seiya battles Titan, who questions his loyalty to Athena and the Sagittarius Saint reveals that his drive to follow Saori comes from his feelings for her. Knowing how he feels out of his devotion to Pallas, the Pallasite attacks with all his Cosmo, just to be wounded by Seiya's arrow. Pallas intervenes to protect Titan and Saori then reconciles with her, seeing how she has reformed after assuming her love for him. However, Europa appears and uses the curse laid on the goddesses to drain their Cosmo and pours it on Subaru, who is revealed to be the Pallasites' true master: Saturn.
Subaru awakens as Saturn, the God of Time, the one who bestowed the Pallasites their Chrono Tectors and Great Swords. Donning his own Chrono Tector, Saturn, accompained by Europa and Mira, reveals that he had descended to Earth and erased his past memories to live among mankind and determine their worthiness. Having regained his former self, he then declares that humanity no longer deserves to remain on the Earth and uses his powers to freeze all of its inhabitants, before retreating to his heavenly palace with his servants. Determined to make Saturn pay and have Subaru return to normal, Seiya and the young saints depart to confront him in the sky, but just after they depart, the wounded Harbinger and Titan steel themselves to defend Pallas and Athena when Europa and Mira return to dispose of the goddesses, but Shun and Hyōga appear to fight in their place.
